2008 Wood Valley Dive Team

Welcome to another season of summer diving!!!

Wood Valley is a member of the Tarheel Diving Association (TDA), which is composed of 7 summer league teams.  TDA member teams are NCSU, Northbrook Country Club, North Hills County Club, Prestonwood Country Club, Scottish Hills Country Club, Tar Heel Diving (THD), and Wood Valley Swim & Racquet Club.

Dive practices will begin soon after the opening of the pool.  While Wake County Schools remain in session practices will be held in the afternoon.  After school ends, dive team practices will be in the morning.  (The schedule for afternoon/evening practices for year-round school students will be determined based on need.)

WOOD VALLEY DIVE TEAM COACHES

Head Coach: Quint Jordan

Quint is returning to the WV Otters dive team, but this year the new Otter’s Head Diving Coach.  Quint has been diving for Wood Valley for 12 years, and swimming for 13 years.  He is currently attending NC State, studying Computer Science.  We all excited that one of Wood Valley’s own is returning to coach.   Quint is well known and well liked by all the kids, and with his many years of diving experience, will do an excellent job with both new and experienced divers.  We welcome Quint for another great year of Wood Valley diving!

Assistant Coach: Ana Caicedo

Ana is returning this year as assistant diving coach!  Ana has been diving with Wood Valley for 5 years with a 1st place TDA award in 2007, was a year-round diver for the North Carolina Aquatic Club for 3 years, and is on the Leesville High School Dive Team where she was selected Most Valuable Diver for 2006-2007!  Ana is very excited to be coaching and is especially interested in working with the younger divers to build confidence.  Ana attends Leesville High School, and is the President of the News Cast Club.  Welcome back Ana!

Dive Meets:  June 12, June 19, June 26, July 3, and July 10.  Warm-ups usually start at 4:30pm for the home team, with the meet starting at 6pm.  The dive meet is held in age group order:  8-under, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, 15-18.  The 8-unders will do 3 dives (one required dive - front dive with 2 optional dives, one from another group– back, inward, reverse, twist), all other age groups will do 4 dives (required dive – front dive any position, 3 optional dives with at least one dive from another group).  Meets may be held in the rain, but not in thunder and lightning.  The rain date is on or before the weekend following the cancelled meet.

The home team is required to supply table workers and at least 3 judges.  Judging clinics will be held June 7, 9am at the Wood Valley Swim & Racquet Club, and May 31, 9am at Scottish Hills Country Club.  Parents of divers are strongly encouraged to attend one of these sessions!

The year-end TDA Championship meet will be held at Northbrook Country Club on Thursday, July 17 (8-under, 9/10, 11/12 girls) and Saturday, July 19 (11/12 boys, 13/14, 15-18).  We will send the top 3 divers in each age group (boys, girls) to the TDA Championship meet.  A diver must have participated in at least 2 dive meets in order to qualify for the TDAs.  Medals and team points will be awards to the top 10 finishers in each age group by gender.  Team trophies will also be awarded, along with the Most Points Award to the divers (boy, girl) in each age group with the highest cumulative score (top 3 meets).

Our coaches are committed to making practices as fun and safe as possible.  Divers are expected to attend practice sessions in order to make progress on their dives throughout the season. Much of the enjoyment of the program comes from participating on a team, the camaraderie with fellow team members, and reaching one’s own personal goals.   Feel free to talk to the coaches before or after practices about your child and any concerns you may have.  During a meet please allow the coaches to focus their attention on the meet.  If any issues arise during a meet, please contact the TDA representative, not the coaches

IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONTINUALLY CHECK THE BREEZEWAY AREA AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE POOL FOR NOTIFICATION OF DIVE TEAM EVENTS, SOCIALS, DIRECTION TO MEETS, AND OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

Your ideas and suggestions are always welcome.  In addition, the program REQUIRES your active support and participation.     Volunteer opportunities:  dive meet judges (must attend a judging clinic), table workers, announcer (home meets), donuts on Fridays after dive meets, taking photos/video for the YS Dive video.  New this year:  Dive Team will staff the concession stand for the 6/17 Home Swim meet – 2 shifts (5-7pm, 7-9pm), 5-6 workers per shift (no food shopping!) A signup sheet for all the volunteer positions will be available at the Parent Meeting, date TBD, and on the bulletin board after the meeting.

We hope that this basic information sheet will be helpful as the new season starts.  If you have other questions, please feel free to call the TDA Parent Representative Lori Campoli, or the Wood Valley Youth Sports Director: Christy Johnson. We’re looking forward to a great summer dive season!

SWIM SUITS

Every two years a new team swimsuit is selected.  This is done for two reasons:  1) the manufacturer discontinues production of the previous suit and 2) swimsuits show lots of wear after 2 years.

This year is not a new year for our team suit – the suit chosen last year is a TYR suit called Alliance Lightning.  We will be ordering through Kast-a-Away (781-3775).  A representative from Kast-a-Away will be available on Youth Sports signup day for swimsuit fitting and sales.
